The Science department is a dynamic and creative team who seek to provide lessons that engage, enthuse and offer opportunity to develop knowledge and transferrable skills (for life in school and beyond). There is a broad and balanced curriculum offer in Science and as a consequence we seek to offer personalised pathways that suit the needs of learners, therefore staff members teach across the age and ability range and whilst mostly in their specialist areas there is expectation that staff teach a second Science subject. There are wide opportunities for staff development within the curriculum area and the diverse skills and expertise of individuals are utilised in regular teaching and learning meetings that ensure we are at the forefront of current teaching developments. In addition, we as a team believe in extending the science community at Burnside and as a very collaborative and competitive team we like to act as positive role models to students and encourage enthusiasm in lessons and in an extra- curricular Science context. As a consequence our extra-curricular offer is vast and all staff members participate fully.

The department has twelve full time and three part time science teachers, an assistant head teacher with Science specialism and three support staff. Science is taught in 12 fully equipped and well-designed science laboratories with full ICT access and suitable for all Science lesson formats in Block 3. In addition the department has a large well-appointed and well-equipped office/resources room, which is the centre of the Science department for all staff and students. All teaching rooms are equipped with ceiling data projectors and interactive whiteboards and practical equipment. Regular Science meetings are held on a Wednesday after school, which provide excellent opportunity to share and develop excellent teaching and learning practice. At present our teaching and learning focus is very much based around literacy and the use of literacy in the Science curriculum and lessons incorporate a literacy focus.
